Understanding and Treating Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are fine lines or streaks that appear on the skin when it is overstretched. This commonly occurs during periods of rapid growth, such as puberty, pregnancy, or significant weight gain. While skin is generally elastic, when it is stretched beyond its limits, the production of collagen—the key protein that helps maintain the skin’s structure—is disrupted. This disruption leads to the formation of stretch marks, which can vary in colour from red or purple to white, depending on their age and the individual’s skin tone.

The severity of stretch marks can be influenced by several factors, including genetics, the degree of stretching, and the presence of certain hormones like cortisol. Cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands, can weaken the elastic fibres in the skin, making it more susceptible to the formation of stretch marks.
